6061 aluminum sheet is a precipitation-hardened aluminium alloy, containing magnesium and silicon as its major alloying elements. Originally called "Alloy 61S", it was developed in 1935. It has good mechanical properties, exhibits good weldability, and is very commonly extruded (second in popularity only to 6063). It is one of the most common alloys of aluminum for general-purpose use.
Though less strong than most of the 2xxx and 7xxx alloys, 6061 aluminum provides an extensive range of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance and can be fabricated by many of the commonly used practices. It is commonly available in pre-tempered grades such as 6061-O (annealed), tempered grades such as 6061-T6 (solutionized and artificially aged) and 6061-T651 (solutionized, stress-relieved stretched and artificially aged).
Alloy | Temper | Thickness (mm) | Width (mm) | Length (mm) | Remark |
6061 | O, H112, T4, T6, T651 | 0.5-240 | 500-2650 | 1000-11800 | PVC or Paper Interleaved |
The 6061 grade aluminum is one of the most popular and available aluminum alloys on the market. It has very good corrosion-resistance, finish-ability and strength.
What makes this aluminum grade so popular are its magnesium and silicon properties, which allow for excellent weldability. The 6061 grade is a very common general purpose aluminum. 6061 typical applications includes:
● Storage tanks
● Bridges
● Railroad Cars
● Furniture
● Truck bodies and frames
● Structural components
● Mold Making
